Update from Vicky

Vicky is now at Nationals but before she left she sent us a quick update to let us know about her big win the week before at Simister and Prestwich, where she walked away with two 1st place positions and then the Championship!

We’ve had such a lovely time watching Vicky’s adventures over the past few months! She really is an incredible inspirational to us all. Her talent, commitment and tenacity is a very special quality.

Thank you to everyone who has kept up with her progress and focused on her growth and acknowledged her development, not only in her equestrian based activities but her involvement within The UKCA.

Vicky was of course out to give 100% help at the National Schools Championships in June and the European Cheerleading Championships in July. Known eel within the organisation as a lovely bubbly character we wish her all the best.

We are right behind you Vicky!

A fab weekend at The European Cheerleading Championships 2014!

We had an absolutely fantastic time at the European Cheerleading Championships, what a great weekend! The talent and skill shown at each competition truly blew us away. We’d like to congratulate all of the competing squads and everybody who took part in the event. Not only the competitors themselves, but those who were there to join in the fun with us too! We always have such brilliant volunteers who work so hard at each event.

The categories were so impressive, Partner Stunt really stood out this year – wow! It’s incredible the level of skill you all have! Street Cheer was also brilliant with lots of creative costumes added into routines to maximise the stylistic dance routines. But, really we loved all the categories and you all worked that floor!

The hosts this year were wonderful and kept the whole arena buzzing with electricity! It was great to have resident DJ Caino and Jason along with their new team Lane and Vicky. Lane had such energy and Vicky’s singing really added a fun element to the day!

We had lots of fun making the, “My favourite thing about today…” video series featuring everyone from the Polish Cheerleaders, to the judges. Check them out on our Instagram account … Honestly, they will make you giggle!

With one more competition over, we can’t wait for the Winter Competition! So get training hard, work as a team, support each other and be ready to impress us even more in December! And remember, we are proud of you!

“You know you make me wanna cheer, cheer, cheer!”

2014 European Cheerleading Championships Come Home to Manchester

As the world’s greatest cyclists gear up for this weekend’s Tour de France in Yorkshire, the British home of cycling in Manchester is hosting its own high-energy international competition – the 2014 European Cheerleading Championships.

Over 1,600 cheerleaders from ten countries will descend on Manchester to take part in this year’s European Cheerleading Championships, hosted at the National Cycling Centre’s Manchester Velodrome.

Manchester is well known as the UK’s Sporting City and it is no coincidence that it is also the national home of cheerleading, one of the fastest growing sports in the country. The United Kingdom Cheerleading Association, a National Organisation for the sport in Great Britain, is based in the region and (in partnership with Manchester City Council) four national championship events are hosted in the city each year.

Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, stated:

“We are immensely proud to be hosting such a great event here in Manchester. As a World leading Sport City, Manchester recognizes the benefits to be gained from Cheerleading – a fast-growing sport which showcases physical activity in a fun and engaging way.”

Pat Hawkins, President of the United Kingdom Cheerleading Association, commented:

“This event is the biggest European Championships ever. I know everyone here will be wowed by the teams competing this weekend.”

Vojko Korosec, the President of the European Cheerleading Association, said:

“It is a privilege to be part of this exciting sport and to witness its growth and development throughout Europe. Competitors have trained hard throughout the year to be here, it is truly a unique sport.”

Spectators can buy tickets on the door for this weekend’s action-packed event. Doors open 8am on Saturday 5th July and Sunday 6th July!

We had so much fun at The National Schools Championships 2014!

First of all we would like to happily announce that the GB Swimmer Lauren Quigley has been given the title of, the Official UKCA Ambassador! She came along at the weekend to show her support for the competition and we had a brilliant time with her. It is an honour to have such a talented and inspirational lady as our Ambassador.

“Such an honour and proud to be asked and now named as an ambassador for The UKCA!” – Lauren Quigley, follow her on Twitter @LaurenAQuigley to see what’s she’s up to.

Well, we had a fantastic weekend at the Manchester Velodrome for The National Schools Championships! The level of skill and talent we saw over the weekend really blew us away!

Congratulations to all the teams who performed across the Saturday and the Sunday, you should all be so proud of yourselves. Whether you were involved with Cheerleading, Pom dance or Street Cheer, there were so many teams that really impressed us – the freestylers were great too!

We would like to give a big thank you and well done to the Insure4Sport Spirit Award winners, The Radclyffe School and the Milano Spirit Award winners, Tintwistle! Your encouragement and support over the weekend was incredible!

A massive thank you to all the coaches for putting so much effort into choreographing the routines, and making sure the squads were ready for the competition! Coaches play such an important role within The UKCA! Don’t forget to show your support for the UKCA coach Vicky Holwarth by donating to help fund her dreams of Rio 2016 here

We would also like to give a big thank you to all the volunteers who worked so hard over the weekend to ensure everything was perfect! Your input, help and support was so important in making the weekend the success that it was! Your efforts are second to none and it’s truly amazing the support that we receive from associations such as The Teenage Cancer Trust

But, of course we can’t forget to thank all the parents, friends and family who came along and gave their support. The banners, signs and special posters made by so many of you really added to the atmosphere of the weekend, and each year the crowd input gets more and more impressive!

Who could forget DJ Jimmy, Jason and the DJ Caino takeover? Our Instagram was officially hijacked by the UKCA’s resident Compere DJ Caino! Check out our account: http://instagram.com/theukca to see what the master of mischief got up to! #cainotakeover

Working together to raise awareness of the importance of sports to children and young adults today is one of our primary aims. Keeping children active in and out of school has become a concern, particularly with a lack of funding in this area. Therefore, this highlights how important it is for institutions to support each other and help those who help others.

This leads to The UKCA’s fundraising project surrounding Victoria Howarth. Vicky is a dedicated member of The UKCA, she trains, coaches and is registered as blind. We want to help Vicky on her way to Rio in 2016 where she dreams of competing in the Paralympics.

Let’s work together to make something amazing happen! Read more and donate here:

Vicky’s progress so far

Finding out about Vicky’s experience couldn’t be easier, you can keep up to date with Vicky’s adventure right here! See your donations in action as we keep you posted on Vicky’s activities over the coming weeks.

Since our initial post Vicky has been busy practising her riding. Herself and her horse, Duster, have been out training hard whilst enjoying some sunshine in preparation for the National Championships.

To show our support for Vicky the UKCA have already donated £500 to the cause. This has enabled Vicky to cover the cost of Duster’s vaccinations and contribute towards his stables for their trip to Gloucestershire. You can see the photos of them below learning the dressage test for the competition in July, it’s lovely to see them together as a team!

Vicky is now one step closer to achieving her dreams of competing in Rio. So make sure you head back next week to read more of Vicky and Duster’s developments!

Cheerleading Tips for Beginners

Cheerleading is a very energetic sport. Cheerleaders need to be fit, strong, agile, enthusiastic and above all confident in their ability to put on a good show.

Are you just starting out in Cheerleading? Have you got a friend who is thinking of joining a Cheerleading team? We take a look at some tips for cheerleaders that are just starting out.

Stretching

Cheerleaders need to be flexible and ideally should have the suppleness close to that of a gymnast. Make sure you work on your flexibility by stretching daily. You could do this even when watching TV so it need not take up too much of your time or interfere with your daily routine.

Always Smile

A good cheerleader will smile through anything. No matter how badly your team is performing or how difficult the stunt is you are performing, remember to smile. Practice your cheers and routines in a full length mirror so you can keep a check on your facial expressions.

1458671_702133796499089_1762380132_n

Chant on the Move

You’ve got to make the most of your voice if you’re going to be a great cheerleader. It’s no good being a great mover if you don’t belt out your cheers – but don’t screech! Practice your cheering while performing your routines – it’s more difficult than you think.

Record and Playback

Have a friend video you performing your cheerleading skills. This will enable you to have a look at your skills and see what areas need improving. You can then make the necessary fixes and record yourself again. This is a good way of allowing you to see your own improvement and will keep you motivated.

Tight and Snap

Keep your motions tight, and snap them into place. A good cheerleader’s moves are always tight and rigid, not loose and flailing. When you clap, your arms should be in front of your face (around nose height) and should not go past your shoulders on the release.

Talk the Talk

Cheerleading has a vocabulary of its own so it’s best that you get up to scratch with all the terms for all the moves as soon as possible. You’ll make a good impression on your coach and fellow cheerleaders if you know your buckets from your basket toss and your cupie from your cradle catch.

1908267_702133786499090_196552815_n

Prepare for Performance

If you’ve never performed in public then it’s time to start now. Start off by performing your moves in front of friends and family so that you get used to people watching you. By the time you arrive for your first training session you should be a little more accustomed to public performance.

Avoid Risks

Don’t do anything you are not comfortable with. Of course be prepared to give things a try, but don’t be forced into doing anything that you haven’t done yet or you consider too risky for your level of experience. A good coach will not expect you to do anything they don’t think you are capable of pulling off.

Correct Paperwork

Cheerleading can be a dangerous sport so make sure that all the necessary paperwork is in place. You will be expected to complete a signed waivers and a permission form (depending on your age) before being allowed to participate. Also, there should be some form of insurance in place to cover you in the event of an unfortunate injury.

Keep Going

Remember, Cheerleading is first and foremost meant to be fun. Yes, there are competitions that you may go on to compete in and expectations within your Cheerleading group may be high, but always make sure that if you make a mistake, you just pick up the next move. Always keep going.
