The UKCA & This Girl Can

The UK Cheerleading Association is proud to announce that we are an Official partner of, This Girl Can. As Cheerleading is a predominantly female sport, we are incredibly excited to be part of this female campaign. The UKCA brings 200,000 girls to the programme, who are already involved with many sports covered by This Girl Can.

The This Girl Can project developed by Sport England, supports female exercise and sporting activities, praising women for their participation, no matter their appearance when doing so. This is an important issue which needs to be addressed as, “Fear of judgement is stopping many of us from taking part in exercise. But as thousands of women up and down the country are proving, it really doesn’t have to” – This Girl Can.

4ED6CAA3-86E5-43CD-837C-6173DF1927B5

This Girl Can aims to get women feeling inspired about their involvement in sport & the empowering message presented by This Girl Can is also echoed within The UKCA. “This Girl Can is here to inspire women to wiggle, jiggle, move and prove that judgement is a barrier that can be overcome.” Modern society and popular culture dictate that women must look their best at all times, but This Girl Can challenges these topics, bringing the issue into mainstream debate.

On their website you can, “Meet the stars of our campaign who are doing what they do, and letting nothing (not even sweat) stand in their way.” Using the hashtag #ThisGirlCan connect with them via Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Vine, YouTube, Google+.

If you aren’t already involved then join the movement by heading over to, This Girl Can.co.uk

We are proud of you!

Our dedicated UKCA member, Lisa attended one of our competitions and she had this to say,

The Maddison’s & UKCA Midlands Competition was our first ever competition and an attempt to introduce our teams, their parents and our supporters to what a Cheer comp is all about, well it couldn’t have gone any better we took 100 spectators and 39 Cheerleaders! Our parents turned up in Cheer tee’s, every parent had made banners, boards and some had even bought their own poms to cheer us on, They had been practicing the chants and cheered on EVERY team with the UKCA ‘we are proud of you’ As a club we really do stick to the tag line ‘the sport of smiles’ and we saw this echoed 100% yesterday ! We were made to feel so welcome and all my cheerleaders had an amazing time. LA Academy walked away with 1, 2nd place 2, 4th places and the Spirit Trophy !! An amazing day had by all!

Even the parents commented on our success,

‘Amazing how we are allow to get involved and enjoy the day with the children, I love Cheerleading’
‘I couldn’t believe how friendly everyone was, and the noise, wow not what I expected but amazing and I enjoyed every minute’

We can’t wait to see you at the next event.

Winter Championships Review

The UKCA Winter Championships 2014! This weekend brought around our highly anticipated UKCA Winter Championships at the National Cycling Centre, and what an event it turned out to be!

Saturday kicked off our final UKCA Comp’ of the year with the typical skill and cheer spirit and it carried right throughout the weekend. As we have come to expect from our cheerleaders we were treated to some fantastic performances and with the raw talent of our competitors noticeable on both days of the competition. We’d like to offer our congratulations to all of the squads who took part and say thank you for making it such a fantastic weekend to be a part of!

On Saturday the cheer and stunt teams blew the crowd away with some superb, acrobatic routines and the Street Cheer teams put in some sublime performances on Sunday. The Pom Dancers were typically terrific and the costumes of all of the squads were fabulous, as always!

The standard of every squad who took part in the championships made picking the stand-out performers a difficult task for our judges, indeed. However, our skilled experts have a keen eye for the exceptional performers and were able to decide on a winner for each category. Click here to view a full list of the UKCA Winter Championships award winners.

Of course with every UKCA Competition there are the all important Cheer Spirit Awards. Cheer Spirit Awards are given to the teams who display an outstanding level of positivity, support and spirit throughout the day.

On Saturday, Rayz All-Stars were awarded the Milano Spirit Award after their brilliant performances and unwavering encouragement for everybody throughout the day. Urban Angels were awarded Sunday’s Insure4sport Spirit Award for the positivity they exuded for themselves and their peers during the day’s competition.
