Why Offerton Cheer Squad Love Cheerleading!!!!

“We are proud of you, say we are proud of you!”

…rings out across the Gym as Hannah performs her first scorpion! Massive group hugs and well dones are an everyday occurrence in Offerton Cheer Squad, a team of twenty three girls from Years Seven to Eleven at Offerton School, Stockport.

Cheerleading is amazing, it helps us to build our confidence and challenges people’s perceptions of us. When some people hear what we do they brand us with being blonde, thick and obsessed with spelling: “Give us an A….?!” It’s great when we perform at school as it gives us the opportunity to show just what we are – a group of talented athletes and Gymnasts with self-confidence, commitment and most importantly – enthusiasm!

Cheerleaders

We train for at least three hours a week; working on improving our jumps, dance routines and stunts. We also help coach the younger members of our team as well as spending an hour a week after school coaching girls and boys from Years Three to Six at Fairway Primary Cheerleading.

Cheerleaders

Over the last three years we have become an increasingly successful team. We came fourth place in our first ever National Schools Championships, 2nd in Pom Dance and 3rd in Stunts the following year and last year were crowned Key Stage Four National Champions with our stunt routine. Even more amazing when you realise that only three members of our team were in Year Ten and the remaining seventeen of us were in Years Seven and Eight!

Offerton Cheerleaders

Although we are incredibly proud of our achievements they are just a bonus in many ways as we would still cheer without them.

Being part of our squad has given us so much. It’s great fun to spend time together, we all support each other and challenge each other to try new things; it has given us the self-confidence to believe that we can perform – even if we are nervous, our cheer faces show that we are having fun. We’ve developed so many leadership and communication skills that we have run Borough Cheerleading and Gymnastics Competitions in Stockport and even ran the Manchester County Primary Cheerleading Competition in May this year!

Cheerleaders

Our squad is very disciplined and encourages us to stay focused and respect each other as you have to be committed to all aspects of school and training to be part of the team. We believe that we are great ambassadors both in and for our school as we always try our best, support each other and have pride in our team and our school.

Cheerleading has given us the opportunity to make incredible and long lasting friendships, made us stronger both physically and mentally, and above all, no matter what we do or where we go from here; to each other, we will always be Champions!!!

North East StreetGames Event Review

Over 250 young people, aged 6 – 18 years, from across the region came together for the first North East StreetGames Street Cheer and Dance event at Burnside Business & Enterprise College in North Tyneside. The event was organised by StreetGames in partnership with North Tyneside Council’s Widening Horizons for Sport programme, Street Cheer and NE Music Factory.

The event kicked off with a mass participation session for Street Cheer a relatively new and very popular discipline of Cheerleading. Over 250 young people of all ages were put through their paces and taught an exciting new routine which they can go away and expand on in the weekly sessions they attend.

This was followed by an introductory session to Urban Flow, a brand new type of street dance which has been written and accredited by NE Music Factory. NE Music Factory are a Community Interest Company based in Blyth who work in close partnership with StreetGames to deliver all types of dance to a large number of community groups across the region.

The afternoon saw the start of the Street Cheer Competition, with the Peeps category groups taking to the floor. The Peeps category represent the under 12 age group and the eleven teams each displayed excellent routines. The category was won by the Little Dudes from the Jenny Gallagher Performance Academy, which was an extra special victory in ac activity that is dominated by girls, as the whole team is made up of boys. The runners up, also from the Jenny Gallagher Performance Academy, were the Dangerous crew, but each and every team who took part deserved to be recognised for their commitment and enthusiasm.

It was then the turn of the older groups to showcase their talent on the dance floor and it proved to be a heavily fought contest. The judges struggled to pick just one winner and therefore awarded the winners trophies to two crews; Misdemeanour and Notorious, both of whom came from NE Music Factory sessions.

The most sought after and popular award of the event though is the Spirit Award. Each and every team taking part on the day are eligible to win this title, which is awarded to the team who show the most enthusiasm, team spirit and fair play on the day. The proud winners on the day were the Paglets, a group from Pallion Action Group in Sunderland, all of whom are aged 6 – 10 years.

The festival was organised by StreetGames, a charity dedicated to developing sporting opportunities for young people living in disadvantaged communities.

Gemma Hollywood, StreetGames Co-ordinator in the North East, who organised the event in partnership with North Tyneside Council’s Sports Development team and Street Cheer, said “We were delighted to have organised this event along with the support from the Widening Horizons for Sport programme. This is the first Street Cheer specific competition that we have ran in the North East and it has proved to be extremely popular. The event gave young people the opportunity to showcase what they have been practicing over the last year at weekly StreetGames sessions. It was also a great opportunity to introduce people to the activity who may have only just started taking part or are thinking of becoming involved.”

Su Cumming, the regional representative for StreetGames, is very keen to see the event build in popularity in the future;

Su said, “This was a fantastic opportunity for all our young people to show their talents in a fun and friendly environment. The event was a fantastic finale to this year’s StreetGames programme and demonstrates how StreetGames continues to grow across the region providing sporting activities to many young people who would not usually have access to these kind of opportunities.”

A great start to 2010!

Stunt Workshops
Well 2010 has certainly started with a bang for UKCA, first the launch or our new website which is developing everyday and then the fabulous success of our Stunt Workshops at the Manchester Velodrome.

We hosted Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced level workshops to give our coaches and teams the opportunity to develop and progress their stunts skills. They proved very popular, selling out in record time and were extremely well received by all those lucky enough to attended.

Highlights for us were helping two teams achieve back tuck basket tosses for the first time, introducing 360 degree rotational mounts to our advanced teams, introducing twisting dismounts to intermediate teams and seeing everyone achieve a new skill whilst taking part in the workshop.

Coaches and teams benefited from the relaxed and positive environment the workshops were delivered in and the amount of one to one help they were able to access from the UKCA trained tutor team. They built confidence and team spirit and all will be returning to their teams with new skills to teach and develop. We can’t wait to see you all at one of our competitions this year showcasing your new skills.

Due to popular demand we are now running the workshops again on 3rd April, so for anyone who missed out, now is the time to get yourself and your team booked on. We hope to see you there!

Tutor Open Day
Another exciting date in our diary was the Tutor Open Day. The UKCA Education Team had been looking forward to this day for sometime now. The day was open to all UKCA members who had an interest in becoming trained as a tutor for UKCA, it was an opportunity to meet the existing team and gain an insight into the skills required for a UKCA tutor.

We had a fun filled day, learned plenty and really got to know one another, all key parts of being part of the UKCA Team. Highlights included some very entertaining individual presentations from the candidates and with the personality testing, us all learning a little more about ourselves.

I am pleased to say that all the candidates showed potential to become part of the tutoring team. They will now decide if they want to follow the tutoring programme and begin observing and part delivering on our courses.

We will look to hold another tutoring open day in the next few months, so for any of you who are interested, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with UKCA. It’s a commitment free day and by attending doesn’t mean you have to take tutoring any further.

Good luck to all our new tutors who are coming on board with the programme!

Coaching Courses in 2010
We are pleased to say that after the snowy start to 2010 which saw a number of courses postponed, the tutoring team are back into full swing travelling the country to deliver courses of all levels in both Cheerleading and Street Cheer.

Every course is unique and it’s fantastic to meet so many people who are excited and keen to become involved in Cheerleading, its also very rewarding to see so many of you coming back for further training and development.

Some of the courses that really stick out for me are
Monday 25th Jan in Lancaster – this was the first of many courses that we are delivering for the British College Sport network. It was fantastic to see so many students enthused by Cheerleading and looking to develop it at College level. There were some big personalities on the course and really made it a fun and enjoyable day for us all – Thanks Guys

Tues 2nd Feb Maidenhead – What a day! This was a massive course with 28 participants, 4 of which were guys all very eager to spread the word of Cheerleading. You provided us with some extremely entertaining moves and proved that its not just females who find Cheerleading a fun and interactive sport. Cheer is really growing in the South, and we are pleased to be assisting with the growth and development there. Good luck guys and we’ll hopefully see you on the 9th June for your Cheer Festival

Team UK 2011

We know 2011 seems along way off as we are only just into 2010, but we really wanted to take the opportunity to let you know what we are thinking regarding Team UK in 2011 and some of the reasons behind our ideas.

As you know, in 2009 we made the decision for out national winners of All Female Cheerleading and Cheer Dance to represent us at World level. Due to the success and the smooth running of 2009, we have and decided to do the same for 2010, with the additional categories of All Female Stunt Group and Hip Hop (Street Cheer) being represented by our national champions.

We do understand that this limits some of you being able to get involved in Team UK, and we are aware that many people prefer the idea of an elite team. Traditionally this was how our national team was selected, an ‘All-Star’ team made up of the best athletes the UK has to offer, regardless of the club they represent.

However, we are now competing annually, rather than every two years as we had done in the past. This puts a huge strain on the resources of a volunteer organisation, and doesn’t allow us enough time to develop and train the team to the standards required for World Competition.

To be truly fair and ensure the best people are chosen requires a time consuming selection process, and then we have to allow for training to commence.

For this, we first have to identify a Coach/Choreographer capable of putting together routines that will be competitive at International level. If – as in 2008 – this means employing foreign coaches, it is a significant cost.

There are considerable logistical and financial problems organising venues where mats and other appropriate facilities are available. Team bonding and holding sufficient training sessions with people spread around the country create further issues.

UKCA would love to send a National Team drawn from the best athletes spread across all our teams. As manager I certainly would prefer that as it would enable me to put more emphasis on us raising the standard of the team we send. We are conscious that any assistance we give a Club team may give them an unfair advantage against other Clubs in our internal competitions. This ties our hands in developing and sending the strongest representative team abroad. That restriction is removed when developing a national team.

So this is where you come in – if you want a National Team we need YOUR help. Below is a list of requirements we need to know people can commit to in order to be involved. I must stress that they need to be people outside the small circle who keep UKCA running week in week out. We are asking for expressions of interest at this stage; you are not committing yourself to anything.

1 Athletes – We need to know who would want to represent their country at World level, to commit and put in 100% effort, and be a true Cheerleader both on and off the floor. If we have misjudged the mood then clearly there is no point in taking this further. We firmly believe our top athletes want to compete in a truly representative Team UK but we need to hear that from you.

You will need to be

  • available to travel the last week in April 2011
  • available for monthly training sessions from September 2010
  • able to fund the trip to Orlando and training ( approx £1,000 – £1,200)
  • committed to Team UK in terms of training, discipline etc
  • a member of UKCA & compete at 2010 Nationals
  • have true Cheerleader Spirit and want the best for your National Team

2 Coaches – we will consider bringing in an International Coach to offer expertise and advice, perhaps attending a training session near the beginning and end. However primary responsibility for the coaching needs to be with someone available monthly. Choreography of the routine will also be your responsibility.

We will consider applications from individuals or teams of coaches, or from a Coach prepared to deal with one skill or part of the routine. A high level Choreographer is obviously essential.

We would prefer the Coach to be a non participant, but would consider an athlete.

3 Administrators – the unnoticed heroes of any successful set up. A seemingly simple task may actually require a lot of work. Take a foreign Coach – once we have identified a suitable individual their flights and hotel have to be booked; they need to be met at the airport, taken to their hotel and then to and from training before returning to the airport. Can you help with jobs like this? If so please let’s hear from you.

4 Sponsors – the more money we can raise, the more this opportunity is open to all. Can you or your company or company’s you know of contribute in any way? We would be happy to explore any fund raising options that are open to help our athletes on their way.

Please get in touch sooner rather than later; the earlier we hear from you the sooner we can all start planning for 2011 and it can’t start a moment too soon if we are to be successful. All applications will be treated in confidence by the management team so you needn’t fear public ridicule! What have you got to lose? If you think you’re good enough or can contribute in any way let us know now.

I would be happy to answer any questions – please email either them or expressions of interest to teamuk@sky.com by 5 April 2010.

Team UK 2010

Before the Street Nationals last October, we announced that we would send a team from the National Crew division to represent the UK at the Cheerleading World Championships in Orlando this April.

That was subject to ICU approving our application and a team reaching a high enough standard to compete at the highest level.

It was quickly obvious that teams were certainly good enough. All we had to do was decide which routine would best fit in ICU’s Hip Hop category…and hope ICU gave us a sought after place. The news finally came that we had a place not only in ICU but IASF as well. ICU is for countries, IASF for the best clubs in the world.

Congratulations to IndepenDANCE!
The news was delivered to coach Jenny Gittins on the day their junior team appeared on Blue Peter as a result of their efforts at our Nationals. Quite a day for them, & I’m sure you will all join me in wishing them well in Orlando. Keep looking in to see reports of their progress here and at the UKCA website. We will also be telling you of how you can be there in 2011!

The full Team UK line up is:
• Senior All Female Cheer: National Champions Rising Stars earned their place to represent UK for the second year running. Lets hope they can build on their success from last year’s double bronze.
• Senior Cheer Dance: Again, we see this category represented by our National Champions and experienced international campaigners – Red Hot Flames. Let’s hope they can turn up the heat again in this year’s competition.
• Senior All female Group Stunt: A new category for us this year, but we are sure our National Champions STCA will not let us down.
• Hip Hop: After reviewing performances at our Street Cheer Nationals, we have invited IndepenDance to represent the UK in this category.
