Volunteering at a Cheerleading event through the eyes of a Student!

As a graduated Sports Development Student, I personally jumped at the opportunity to volunteer within a role of helping run the UK Cheerleading Association – Northern Ireland National Cheerleading Championships. Within the degree I undertook, there was never any opportunity to engage in anything as immense as these Championships.

In reflection, I feel it would be a credit and tribute to allow university students to undertake the responsibilities, trust and experience of leading and running such a large event. Already from my own experience I have seen first hand the benefits and opportunities this can bring, such as; providing an insight into the organisation and costs that go into running a National event, it will also engage and provide students with experience into an activity and sport which is increasing in popularity both in and out of school, and will furthermore provide students with the opportunity to make contacts (with coaches, judges, schools etc…), which may further help their development in sport and sports development.
Deirdre Weatherall
As a final input I would like to highlight the most important and enjoyable aspect of volunteering which was seeing and experiencing the excitement, meaning and enjoyment this event brought to all participants, schools, teachers and judges. I found the talent incredible and gave me great motivation to obtain coaching qualifications in and around Cheerleading and Dance.

Deirdre Weatherall

I recently became involved in a Cheerleading event through a friend who is a volunteer Coach. I volunteered my time to help at the Northern Ireland Cheerleading competition in March. I found the people who run the event very friendly and helpful. They were happy to answer any questions I had and their enthusiasm for the sport was very inspirational.
Vicki Wharry
I found the competition a fun experience even though I was meant to be working – it didn’t feel like work! I would urge anyone who wants to have a fun day out and wants to volunteer their time to get involved with UK Cheerleading. After this weekend I have decided I want to be part of this organisation and do my training to be a Cheerleading Coach.

Vicki Wharry

I became involved in volunteering within the N.I Cheerleading Championships through coaching Cheerleading and undergoing my Level 2 Cheerleading Coaching Award. However as a Sports Development student I found this a brilliant and fulfilling experience to encounter.

The event itself is a popular well known occasion, the enthusiasm of the young people, judges, audience and coaches is astonishing. This type of competition gives young people the opportunity to enhance their sporting ability and develop their skills to a high standard, and work towards competition level. The hard work and continuous effort that goes into competitions such as this pays of as the standard and performance of the sport from young people of all ages and abilities, the talent and standard was incredible.

Taking part in this experience has benefited me as it has let me gain more knowledge of the sport in many different aspects, the reason being that you get to partake in a range of different roles throughout the two day event. As a sports student it lets you get involved with people working within your line of work and opens many opportunities for you to pursue your knowledge and learn more. Overall I would recommend this type of voluntary work as it will teach you many different aspects of the running of an event, and develop your experience into a different sport.

North East StreetGames Event Review

Over 250 young people, aged 6 – 18 years, from across the region came together for the first North East StreetGames Street Cheer and Dance event at Burnside Business & Enterprise College in North Tyneside. The event was organised by StreetGames in partnership with North Tyneside Council’s Widening Horizons for Sport programme, Street Cheer and NE Music Factory.

The event kicked off with a mass participation session for Street Cheer a relatively new and very popular discipline of Cheerleading. Over 250 young people of all ages were put through their paces and taught an exciting new routine which they can go away and expand on in the weekly sessions they attend.

This was followed by an introductory session to Urban Flow, a brand new type of street dance which has been written and accredited by NE Music Factory. NE Music Factory are a Community Interest Company based in Blyth who work in close partnership with StreetGames to deliver all types of dance to a large number of community groups across the region.

The afternoon saw the start of the Street Cheer Competition, with the Peeps category groups taking to the floor. The Peeps category represent the under 12 age group and the eleven teams each displayed excellent routines. The category was won by the Little Dudes from the Jenny Gallagher Performance Academy, which was an extra special victory in ac activity that is dominated by girls, as the whole team is made up of boys. The runners up, also from the Jenny Gallagher Performance Academy, were the Dangerous crew, but each and every team who took part deserved to be recognised for their commitment and enthusiasm.

It was then the turn of the older groups to showcase their talent on the dance floor and it proved to be a heavily fought contest. The judges struggled to pick just one winner and therefore awarded the winners trophies to two crews; Misdemeanour and Notorious, both of whom came from NE Music Factory sessions.

The most sought after and popular award of the event though is the Spirit Award. Each and every team taking part on the day are eligible to win this title, which is awarded to the team who show the most enthusiasm, team spirit and fair play on the day. The proud winners on the day were the Paglets, a group from Pallion Action Group in Sunderland, all of whom are aged 6 – 10 years.

The festival was organised by StreetGames, a charity dedicated to developing sporting opportunities for young people living in disadvantaged communities.

Gemma Hollywood, StreetGames Co-ordinator in the North East, who organised the event in partnership with North Tyneside Council’s Sports Development team and Street Cheer, said “We were delighted to have organised this event along with the support from the Widening Horizons for Sport programme. This is the first Street Cheer specific competition that we have ran in the North East and it has proved to be extremely popular. The event gave young people the opportunity to showcase what they have been practicing over the last year at weekly StreetGames sessions. It was also a great opportunity to introduce people to the activity who may have only just started taking part or are thinking of becoming involved.”

Su Cumming, the regional representative for StreetGames, is very keen to see the event build in popularity in the future;

Su said, “This was a fantastic opportunity for all our young people to show their talents in a fun and friendly environment. The event was a fantastic finale to this year’s StreetGames programme and demonstrates how StreetGames continues to grow across the region providing sporting activities to many young people who would not usually have access to these kind of opportunities.”

Stunt Workshops
Well 2010 has certainly started with a bang for UKCA, first the launch or our new website which is developing everyday and then the fabulous success of our Stunt Workshops at the Manchester Velodrome.

We hosted Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced level workshops to give our coaches and teams the opportunity to develop and progress their stunts skills. They proved very popular, selling out in record time and were extremely well received by all those lucky enough to attended.

Highlights for us were helping two teams achieve back tuck basket tosses for the first time, introducing 360 degree rotational mounts to our advanced teams, introducing twisting dismounts to intermediate teams and seeing everyone achieve a new skill whilst taking part in the workshop.

Coaches and teams benefited from the relaxed and positive environment the workshops were delivered in and the amount of one to one help they were able to access from the UKCA trained tutor team. They built confidence and team spirit and all will be returning to their teams with new skills to teach and develop. We can’t wait to see you all at one of our competitions this year showcasing your new skills.

Due to popular demand we are now running the workshops again on 3rd April, so for anyone who missed out, now is the time to get yourself and your team booked on. We hope to see you there!

Tutor Open Day
Another exciting date in our diary was the Tutor Open Day. The UKCA Education Team had been looking forward to this day for sometime now. The day was open to all UKCA members who had an interest in becoming trained as a tutor for UKCA, it was an opportunity to meet the existing team and gain an insight into the skills required for a UKCA tutor.

We had a fun filled day, learned plenty and really got to know one another, all key parts of being part of the UKCA Team. Highlights included some very entertaining individual presentations from the candidates and with the personality testing, us all learning a little more about ourselves.

I am pleased to say that all the candidates showed potential to become part of the tutoring team. They will now decide if they want to follow the tutoring programme and begin observing and part delivering on our courses.

We will look to hold another tutoring open day in the next few months, so for any of you who are interested, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with UKCA. It’s a commitment free day and by attending doesn’t mean you have to take tutoring any further.

Good luck to all our new tutors who are coming on board with the programme!

Coaching Courses in 2010
We are pleased to say that after the snowy start to 2010 which saw a number of courses postponed, the tutoring team are back into full swing travelling the country to deliver courses of all levels in both Cheerleading and Street Cheer.

Every course is unique and it’s fantastic to meet so many people who are excited and keen to become involved in Cheerleading, its also very rewarding to see so many of you coming back for further training and development.

Some of the courses that really stick out for me are
Monday 25th Jan in Lancaster – this was the first of many courses that we are delivering for the British College Sport network. It was fantastic to see so many students enthused by Cheerleading and looking to develop it at College level. There were some big personalities on the course and really made it a fun and enjoyable day for us all – Thanks Guys

Tues 2nd Feb Maidenhead – What a day! This was a massive course with 28 participants, 4 of which were guys all very eager to spread the word of Cheerleading. You provided us with some extremely entertaining moves and proved that its not just females who find Cheerleading a fun and interactive sport. Cheer is really growing in the South, and we are pleased to be assisting with the growth and development there. Good luck guys and we’ll hopefully see you on the 9th June for your Cheer Festival
