Sport and Recreation Alliance Conference 2018

On Tuesday 25th September, Trish and Jeff of UKCA attended the Sport and Recreation Alliance Conference 2018 in London.

The one-day event provided the opportunity to engage with fellow SRA members on a variety of policy issues, ask questions of the Board of Directors, celebrate the successes of the previous year and learn about the Sport and Recreation Alliance‘s future plans. The day consisted of:

Guest Keynote Speakers, Interactive Panel Discussions, the Annual General Meeting – chaired by the SRA President, HRH The Earl of Wessex and the Autumn Divisional Meetings – where members from different divisions could focus on issues relevant to likeminded organisations.

Throughout the day attendees were introduced to two major initiatives:

The #RightToBeActive Petition

SRA‘s #RightToBeActive campaign highlights the dangerous health risks faced by our children through inactivity.

“Sport and recreation can help solve many of the biggest threats facing our children. Making it part of their daily lives will make them healthier and happier.”

To join the Sport and Recreation Alliance’s call for government to give every child the fundamental #RightToBeActive and find out more information visit: #RightToBeActive Petition

Do It – Join In

The Do It initiative aims to introduce more volunteers to local sporting clubs.

“Local clubs need you
Right now, 7 out of 10 sport and recreation clubs across the UK need more people to join in.

Without you they wouldn’t be able to continue the invaluable role they play in their local communities in getting the nation active. And we cannot afford to lose the huge benefits that grassroots clubs provide.”

If you want to give back to your local community – Find a volunteering opportunity with Sport and Recreation Alliance’s Join In Opportunity Finder: doit.life/join-in

It was a fantastic event to be a part of and it’s extremely exciting to meet so many organisations who care as much about getting young people involved in sport as the UK Cheerleading Association do. We also had the opportunity to meet with one of UKCA’s partners Gateley Plc at the event too!

We’d like to say a huge thank you to Sport and Recreation Alliance for putting on such a positive and informative event. You can find out more about SRA here.

Satellite Clubs

Satellite clubs are local sport and physical activity clubs that are designed around the needs of young people and provide them with positive, enjoyable experiences that make it easy for them to become active or to develop more regular activity habits.

Supported by or linked to a local community sports club or physical activity opportunity (The Hub), satellite clubs should be designed in such a way that they respond to the specific demands for sport from young people and should be positioned to support young people at points of disruption in their lives.

Satellite clubs should also be designed to help shape the way in which existing sport and physical activity providers tailor their offer to meet the different motivations and needs of young people, particularly those who are less active or at risk of falling out of sport.

Understanding what is important to young people and what their needs and wishes are is the first step when developing a satellite club opportunity. Satellite clubs should then be designed to meet those needs and provide a positive, fun experience, giving young people the confidence to take part.

Who is this Funding for?
– Any Club, youth group or organisation working with young people aged 14-19. The core audience among this age group being those who are inactive or generally less active on a regular basis.
