Cheerleading at Banbridge Academy

A BIG THANK YOU………………..

UKCA lead a FUN “Cheerleading Day” at Banbridge Academy on Monday 25th June.

The day was a huge success with UKCA NI representative Karen Graham leading a full day of pom dance and stunt workshops for the pupils.

Three full routines were taught and performed with great enthusiasm inspiring the pupils to form teams for the 2013 NI National UKCA Championships.

The pupils enjoyed their first taste of Cheerleading and routines were showcased and filmed at the end of the sessions.

“I hope we at UKCA have inspired the girls to start school teams, which I am very sure will be the outcome given the response at the end of special Cheerleading event.”

A huge thank you to Teacher Miss Diane Morrow, who was trained by UKCA in 2009, for inviting UKCA to lead their special event which was to raise funds for the schools successful dance team as they prepare to head to London to showcase their skills with other UK schools.
The pupils and staff made us very welcome.

Thank you also to the local UKCA NI Cheerleaders who attended to share their Skills & Knowledge and also to Northern Ireland Allstar Cheerleaders senior stunt team who put on a demonstration for the pupils in stunting skills and tumbling skills.

Thank you Miss Morrow & Banbridge Academy for a most enjoyable day of Cheerleading!

The 5th Warwickshire Schools Pom Dance competition took place at North Leamington School on Friday 6th July. The Primary schools performed in the morning and Secondary in the afternoon.

36 teams, over 600 students, took part over the whole day. What a way to celebrate the “Sport of Smiles” and end this school Olympic year.

We were also very lucky as one of the UKCA judges, Kim Clarke, also brought in her Olympic Torch. All the students and adults were able to have their photograph taken with torch – thank you, Kim.

Thank you to all staff, coaches and competitors for making it such a special event.
Thank you to UKCA for providing the 4 judges.

Antrim Forum Competition

Schools Festival, Thursday 31st May 2012, Co Antrim

The inaugural Schools Festival in Northern Ireland was a roaring success with 120 pupils from local Primary Schools competing for the top three places in the closed championship.

The festival was a culmination of the partnership of Antrim Borough Council, Sport NI and UKCA.

Local schools were invited as part of the ongoing Active Communities Programme which encourages participation in sport and healthy lifestyles, whilst encouraging mutual trust & respect, an integral part of the UKCA Mission Statement.

This very important event was part of UKCA’s on-going LTAD Programme to encourage a sustained growth of grass root Cheerleaders and set a goal to compete at the annual UKCA Northern Ireland Schools National Championships.

This can only be achieved with the ongoing successful working partnerships UKCA holds with local sporting agencies and council authorities.

Schools within the Antrim Borough Council areas were invited to register for this exciting inaugural event and the day proved to be a great success with all teams wining an award.

Antrim Borough Council Coach Samantha Burrell (trained by UKCA) not only choreographed the schools competition routines, but trained the pupils over 6 weeks in preparation for the 31st May event.

Northern Ireland UKCA Representative, Karen Graham, was delighted to be involved with mentoring Samantha and also delivering a stunt workshop. Karen also had the pleasure of judging all performances.

Olympus Girls Club – Thursday 31st May 2012

UKCA received an invitation from one of Northern Ireland’s biggest clubs to present their annual year end awards at their 43rd Display.

NI Rep Karen Graham proudly took up this role on behalf of the organisation and was earlier in the year involved in judging the girls for the annual prizes in physical movement and activity.

Olympus displayed their winning NI Pom Dance routines to an appreciative audience.

Olympus Girls Club have over 200 young girls and adults and can boast a disabled section ‘The Spectrum Girls’ and it was a delight to see these members being fully integrated into the performances.

A huge thank you to Olympus on behalf of UKCA for this special invitation.

Cheerleading in Wales – Spring 2012

Background:

Flintshire Festival of Youth Sport is the biggest event running in Wales. It happens once a year and is a mass participation event getting young people involved in sport and physical activity throughout the county. This year was its 6th year of running, Cheerleading has been one of the sports for the last 4 years!

Each year we run courses though UKCA and advertise them through schools and coaches, we fund their course costs in hoping that they will deliver coaching sessions in return to enter the competition on the day of the festival.

This year:

UKCA Level 2 Basic Skills course ran on 24th November 2011.
Attended: 7 Teachers and 4 Coaches

17 primary schools, 4 secondary schools and 2 special schools chose Cheerleading as a sport that they would like to take part in this year.

The new qualified teachers coached their own schools and new coaches and previous coaches qualified from the past years coached other schools. Teachers/coaches were mentored by myself leading up to the festival.

Over 300 children across all 23 schools took part in the coaching sessions that ran 1session per week from January leading up to the Festival.

280 cheerleaders took part and competed on the day of the festival.

What happened next:

All schools were given information of the opportunity to enter the UKCA Spring Championships in June. So far 2 primary schools and 2 secondary schools have decided to enter.

Cheerleading sessions are continuing in some primary schools by popular demand! All secondary schools from the festival are continuing in extra curricular cheerleading sessions. With other schools starting cheerleading.

2 new Community Clubs have started following the festival. There are now 4 Community Clubs running in Flintshire. (One club are competing for their 4th year in the Nationals next week!)

Children and young people are attending community clubs following their involvement in the festival.

2 coaches are attending the Level 3 Basic Stunts course in May in hoping to develop their club and schools.
