Bolton Schools Competition

On Wednesday 8th February an Inter-Schools Pom Dance Competition took place at Canon Slade School in Bolton. Six different local schools attended and a fantastic afternoon was had by all involved.

The competition was split into two sections: Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. UKCA Judge Danielle Oddie had the honour of being invited and went to judge the competition along with 4 other judges who all coach local UKCA Cheerleading Squads.

The talent shown over the whole afternoon was very impressive and the spirit of all the cheerleaders throughout the whole competition was phenomenal. All 5 judges agreed in the end that the UKCA Spirit Award for the Bolton Schools Competition should go to Canon Slade, who showed fantastic Cheerleading spirit and gave support to all of the other teams.

UKCA look forward to next year’s competition and hopefully we will see some of the teams again at the UKCA National Schools’ Championships in June.

European Cheerleading Championship 2012 to be held in Italy

The 2012 European Cheerleading Championship and Junior European Cheerleading Championship will be held in Riccione, Italy on June 30th and July 1st 2012.
After intense talks and a visit of ECA president Vojko Korosec to Riccione in August, ECA decided to hold the 2012 ECC/ JECC in Italy. Riccione offers a new arena, the Riccione playhall, to host the ECC/ JECC and the mayor of the city promised full support for this event.

Ingolf Neumann, ECA board member and head of the ECA Championship Committee:
“We are convinced that we’ve found a superb partner to host our championships in 2012. FICAD president Riccardo Cavalieri showed us good reasons to hold ECC in Italy and we think that Italy will be a great host to athletes, coaches and spectators from all over Europe.”

Riccione is a city on the Adriatic coast. It has experience in hosting big sports events, such as the XVII Seniors Athletics World Championships in 2007 with more than 9.000 participants or the annual “beach volleyball festival” with some 1.000 athletes.
ECA is the European governing body for the sport of cheerleading. ECA hosts the annual European Cheerleading Championship and Junior European Cheerleading Championship with up to 1.500 athletes competing for the European title.

Street Games Manchester 2011

Good times were had by over 150 young people taking part in Street Cheer during the North West Street Games event at Sport City on 26th August. It is the fourth year that Street Cheer has been included in the event and we are pleased to say was one of the most successful we’ve ever run.

The energy and enthusiasm could be felt from the start as all participants took part in a Master Class Workshop with Hannah, Ruth and Lindsey. ‘Some of the youngsters had never done any dancing before and they really loved it, I was so proud of them going on to then perform what they had learned in the afternoon, such an achievement for them’ Lindsey commented.

Let Me Play Summer Camp 2011 Review

Year two of the UKCA and Let Me Play Summer residential camp was another fantastic success and it was great to see familiar faces and welcome new members to the Cheerleading family during the first week of August 2011.

The setting for the camp is just incredible. Elmhurst Royal School of Ballet in Birmingham is a pleasure to work in, with over 10 fully equipped studios to choose from and a state of the art theatre to showcase a final performance in. The camp location is definitely one of the highlights of the week.

This year was truly international we had participants from all over the world, including Qatar, Switzerland, Germany and Spain, plus of course a range of young people from all over the UK too. It certainly proved that Cheerleading crosses language barriers as the whole group gelled and became great friends whilst achieving and working hard to pull off a great final show.

Part of the fun is staying on camp, there is a mixture of sleeping arrangements, some shared dorms and other individual rooms with en suite facilities, lights out is always interesting to see how creative the campers can be with rule bending and sneaking around sleeping areas! Makes breakfast story swapping very funny the next morning.

Talking of breakfast, this is just one of highlights on the menu, all the food is lovely, plus with all the hard work and sweating that goes on during the day, the lunches and evening meals are always something we look forward to.

At night there is always something going on, organised activities, chilling in the common room, showing off talents and skills, and practising the days routines is usually what surrounds you. Throughout the week you meet so many passionate, talented and motivated young people it really energises you, there’s a constant buzz around camp generated by all the enthusiasm.

We were so happy to be a part of the camp again this year and it was positive to see how its grown and developed from last year, we are very much looking forward to being involved again next year. So what are you waiting for? Get yourself booked onto the Let Me Play Cheer Camp 2012.

CONGRATULATIONS TO VENOM STUNT & CHEER !

At the European Cheerleading Championships held in Ljubljana Slovenia on Saturday 2nd July 2011, Team UK representatives Venom were victorious, and were crowned the best in Europe by winning the Sunshine Cheer Cup.

Head coach Jill Orrell said “We are extremely proud to be part of Team UK; it was such an amazing experience to be part of the first ever Sunshine Cheer Cup and winning at first attempt in European Competition. The atmosphere was fantastic, and emotions were electric with the representatives of each Country carrying their flag singing along to we are the world! This is not only a tremendous achievement for our team it is history in the making – TEAM UK GOLD!”

It was a great learning experience for the girls to be able to watch how the different teams prepare and train for such a big competition. They had the opportunity to exchange tips and identify new warm up techniques, particularly with Team Germany who shared the same hotel. The Team had wonderful experience and were well supported by friends and family who travelled from the UK to cheer them on. The highest accolade was paid to the Team when the President of ECA, Vojko Korosec, made a special trip to the hotel to congratulate Venom Stunt & Cheer on their winning performance.

Venom were thrilled to be competing along side the best teams in Europe. They have devoted considerable time and effort training solidly since qualifying at the UKCA Nationals in March to perfect their new routine. This is the first time a Team from the United Kingdom have won first place at the European Championships – a fantastic result!

Brittne ea Bliss, the Venom Captain said “We are so excited to have won the European Sunshine Cup! It’s a beautiful crystal Cup that is very precious to us all. We feel really proud and are like one big family, cheerleading is our life, we are all best friends and we trust each other; our bases and flyers need that trust, I think this gives us the confidence that is needed with our stunts. We are so proud! “.

To all those who were involved in the preparation of the Team and to the athletes themselves, we at UKCA are also proud of you …. well done!

UKCA National Community Championships 14th May 2011

The National Community Championships took place at Manchester Velodrome last weekend, showcasing the vast development of cheerleading within the UK.

This year we saw 179 performances, with over 1600 cheerleaders competing, it was also the first time the UKCA has run a competition with a double judging panel. We saw some very impressive performances in all 3 of the categories, Cheerleading, Group Stunt and Pom Dance, from our Tiny Teenies divisions, where some competitiors were as young as 3 years old, all the way up to our Masters, some of who were over the age of 60!

The atmosphere in the arena was electric with the 1000’s of cheerleaders, coaches and spectators all being entertained by not only the amazing performances that were on the floor but also the wonderful MC’s who kept the energy up throughout the day, even after 10 hours of work!

Many thanks to everyone who came whether it was as a competitor, volunteer, spectator or coach, without you we would not have been able to run such a fantatsic event! WE ARE PROUD OF YOU, SAY WE ARE PROUD OF YOU!
