Ready for Lockdown 2.0?

On Thursday 5th November Boris Johnson and the UK Government imposed new, tighter restrictions in England in an effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19 across the nation.

This means that Cheerleading activities within your club suspended for at least 4 weeks. In this difficult time it is important that we keep our body and minds healthy by staying active. Physical activity improves our sporting abilities, mood and overall health.

Train at home

Whilst we cannot currently take part in club activity together, there are steps we can still take to train our arm motions, jumps, flexibility, core and keep our skills sharp from the safety of our own home.

UKCA have put together a #StayHomeStaySafe collection of videos and challenges that you and your family can follow along to that will help keep you active during Lockdown 2.0. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be adding more home workouts for you to try and we’d also love to see how you’re getting along.

Visit the #StayHomeStaySafe section of our website, follow along with the sessions and share you videos with us on social media to inspire others! Just tag the UK Cheerleading Association in your posts.

Get the popcorn ready!

Want to beat the boredom and get your Cheerleading fix during lockdown? All of the highlights from past UKCA competitions are live on the website for you to relive during Lockdown 2.0 from home! Visit the Videos section of our website for competition highlights and more!

Please make sure you follow all government advice and stay safe. We are proud of you!

Your Inspiring Stories of 2020: Lyndsey

Over the last few weeks, we’ve been asking you to share your inspiring stories and achievements that have kept you going through the turbulent year that 2020 has been to shine a light on the positive moments of these uncertain times.

Lyndsey’s Story:

6 MONTHS OF HARD WORK & FOCUS CAN PUT YOU 5 YEARS AHEAD IN LIFE

“Our head coach Lyndsey had a dream when she left school that within 5 years she would have her own Cheer gym. During lockdown whilst continuing to work and deliver her usual weekly classes she also managed to fulfil this dream and secure her very own space within a mill and completely transform it.”

Before

“She has gone from running classes 2 nights a week to 5 nights as week whilst still working during the day and at weekends all so our ‘Hurricanes’ can have their own home.”

After

“As a mum, fellow coaches and our extended Cheer family we would just like to say how proud we all are of her and we are 100% certain she embodies this saying!!” – Karen, Hurricanes Cheerleading

We’d like to say a huge well done to Lyndsey for making her dreams come true and providing an excellent space for her young Cheerleaders to learn and develop in testing times this year! Another amazing story. We are proud of you!

COVID-19 Update

On 12 October the Prime Minister announced a new system of COVID-19 restrictions to replace the existing local lockdown measures in individual areas.

Under the new scheme, local areas will be placed in one of three tiers; Tier 1 (Medium), Tier 2 (High) and Tier 3 (Very High).

Tier 1 areas are subject to the existing national restriction measures such as the ‘rule of six’.

Those areas within Tier 2 see additional restrictions, such as a ban on households mixing indoors.

In Tier 3 areas, indoor gyms, fitness and dance studios and indoor sports facilities are required to close by law, which is in contradiction to the guidance issued and is currently being challenged.

However, an exemption applies which allows these venues to be used by elite sports people, under 18s and people with a disability. Within each of these tiers, organised outdoor sporting activity can continue and remains exempt from restrictions on the number of people allowed to gather, subject to this taking place under approved guidance.

Detailed guidance on what you can do in each of these tiers is available here:

The government has also published a postcode checker to find out which tier your local area is in.

Your Inspiring Stories of 2020: Darcey

Over the last few weeks, we’ve been asking you to share your inspiring stories and achievements that have kept you going through the turbulent year that 2020 has been to shine a light on the positive moments of these uncertain times.

Earlier this year a local Library in Dane Bank was at risk of shutting down and urgently needed to raise funds to keep going.

One of Apex Cheer Stockport’s Teenies, Darcey made bookmarkers herself and sold them outside her house to raise money for her local library and was awarded for doing so.

“We were so proud of her for raising money for her community in such a friendly and creative way!”

Your Inspiring Stories of 2020: Tia

Over the last few weeks, we’ve been asking you to share your inspiring stories and achievements that have kept you going through the turbulent year that 2020 has been to shine a light on the positive moments of these uncertain times.

This is Tia’s story…

Tia is 12 and a member of ECA Cirencester Cheer in Gloucestershire. For Tia and her family 2020 has been especially challenging. Along with the uncertainty and the restrictions created by COVID-19, Tia and her Mum self-isolated together for 15 weeks due to her Mum’s medical condition.

“When lockdown hit I was very unwell needing urgent surgery. Due to my health Tia couldn’t even go out out for a walk.”

Despite the difficult times, Tia showed incredible Cheer Spirit, helping Doctors and Nurses who would visit them and keeping her Mum’s spirits high. When Tia’s friends invited her to go for a socially distanced walk during lockdown Tia was unable to go however she still chose to see the positive side and made sure to check-in with her friends when possible.

“At 12 this was a lot of additional pressure but Tia didn’t complain! She even sent gifts and encouragement to friends who she felt were in need.”

Recently, reality star Jamie Laing and his confectionary company partnered with the charity HEROES to search for, recognise and say a big thank you to the heroes of the pandemic. Tia’s mum nominated the Cheerleader and Tia was subsequently featured as one of the campaign’s “HERO of the Week”.

As well as featuring on social media as a hero, Tia also received a personal video message from the reality star himself who said,

“Hey Tia it’s me Jamie…I just want to say that you are a complete hero. I’ve heard about your Mum’s medical condition, I’ve heard that you’ve been locked down for 15 weeks…I heard you haven’t complained once. Big Thumbs up to you hunny, sending all our love!”.

Tia’s Mum said the story shows the massive impact young people can make during difficult times.

“…it also sent a message our young people can be a hero and make a huge difference! I had my surgery during lockdown and had had a few emergency re-admission since but Tia is as always my personal Cheerleader. That spirit is something that radiates.”

We’d like to say a huge well done to Tia for her incredible spirit and massive thank you to Helen, her proud Cheer Mum for sharing this inspiring story. We wish you all the best for the future! We are proud of you!
