WISPA Courses a Great Success

The demand for UKCA coach education courses in Northern Ireland continues to increase as the Organisation sets the bench mark for quality education and a good reputation in Safe Practice.

  • UKCA delivered a full Leadership course on the 16th October
  • UKCA also delivered its first Street Cheer Dance taster Workshop in Belfast
  • The weekend of the 29th & 30th October witnessed UKCA deliver yet further successful coach education courses in Belfast where 30 Coaches completed qualifications in both Basic Cheerleading Skills & Basic Tumbling
  • Congratulations to all the coaches who attended the courses and a huge thank you to our partner WISPA who provided funding for the candidates through the International Fund for Ireland.

We certainly have inspired new coaches and teachers to introduce Cheerleading into their schools programme and also sparked interest in what we hope will be our first disability category at the NI UKCA 2012 Championships. The successful outcome of the October courses has also resulted in a demand for Northern Ireland’s first UKCA Stunt Coach Education Course which will roll out in March 2012.

Keep abreast of all courses in the region by following the Cheer Northern Ireland Facebook page and also the UKCA diary dates.

European Cheerleading Championship 2012 to be held in Italy

The 2012 European Cheerleading Championship and Junior European Cheerleading Championship will be held in Riccione, Italy on June 30th and July 1st 2012.
After intense talks and a visit of ECA president Vojko Korosec to Riccione in August, ECA decided to hold the 2012 ECC/ JECC in Italy. Riccione offers a new arena, the Riccione playhall, to host the ECC/ JECC and the mayor of the city promised full support for this event.

Ingolf Neumann, ECA board member and head of the ECA Championship Committee:
“We are convinced that we’ve found a superb partner to host our championships in 2012. FICAD president Riccardo Cavalieri showed us good reasons to hold ECC in Italy and we think that Italy will be a great host to athletes, coaches and spectators from all over Europe.”

Riccione is a city on the Adriatic coast. It has experience in hosting big sports events, such as the XVII Seniors Athletics World Championships in 2007 with more than 9.000 participants or the annual “beach volleyball festival” with some 1.000 athletes.
ECA is the European governing body for the sport of cheerleading. ECA hosts the annual European Cheerleading Championship and Junior European Cheerleading Championship with up to 1.500 athletes competing for the European title.

Street Games Manchester 2011

Good times were had by over 150 young people taking part in Street Cheer during the North West Street Games event at Sport City on 26th August. It is the fourth year that Street Cheer has been included in the event and we are pleased to say was one of the most successful we’ve ever run.

The energy and enthusiasm could be felt from the start as all participants took part in a Master Class Workshop with Hannah, Ruth and Lindsey. ‘Some of the youngsters had never done any dancing before and they really loved it, I was so proud of them going on to then perform what they had learned in the afternoon, such an achievement for them’ Lindsey commented.

Let Me Play Summer Camp 2011 Review

Year two of the UKCA and Let Me Play Summer residential camp was another fantastic success and it was great to see familiar faces and welcome new members to the Cheerleading family during the first week of August 2011.

The setting for the camp is just incredible. Elmhurst Royal School of Ballet in Birmingham is a pleasure to work in, with over 10 fully equipped studios to choose from and a state of the art theatre to showcase a final performance in. The camp location is definitely one of the highlights of the week.

This year was truly international we had participants from all over the world, including Qatar, Switzerland, Germany and Spain, plus of course a range of young people from all over the UK too. It certainly proved that Cheerleading crosses language barriers as the whole group gelled and became great friends whilst achieving and working hard to pull off a great final show.

Part of the fun is staying on camp, there is a mixture of sleeping arrangements, some shared dorms and other individual rooms with en suite facilities, lights out is always interesting to see how creative the campers can be with rule bending and sneaking around sleeping areas! Makes breakfast story swapping very funny the next morning.

Talking of breakfast, this is just one of highlights on the menu, all the food is lovely, plus with all the hard work and sweating that goes on during the day, the lunches and evening meals are always something we look forward to.

At night there is always something going on, organised activities, chilling in the common room, showing off talents and skills, and practising the days routines is usually what surrounds you. Throughout the week you meet so many passionate, talented and motivated young people it really energises you, there’s a constant buzz around camp generated by all the enthusiasm.

We were so happy to be a part of the camp again this year and it was positive to see how its grown and developed from last year, we are very much looking forward to being involved again next year. So what are you waiting for? Get yourself booked onto the Let Me Play Cheer Camp 2012.

Cheerleading deliver skills for Life

“My husband and I encouraged our daughter into Cheerleading because we wanted her to gain the joy that comes from being part of a team and we certainly havn’t been disappointed.”

“Cheerleading has motivated her to be her best but also, as part of a group, encouraged her to see herself as part of something bigger, that comes from being aware of others needs too.”

“We know these are characteristics that will stay with her for life”.

Northern Ireland All Stars Auditions

The UKCA Home Country held it’s 2nd annual auditions for sought after positions on it’s 2011/2012 National Team on Saturday 20th August.

The four-hour selection programme attracted Cheerleaders from across Northern Ireland and it was good to see an even greater proportion of clubs represented this year and with 100% turnout showing as UKCA registered members.

The audition programme proved very successful with all candidates achieving required scores in each of the selection components, stunt work, tumbling skills, choreography and flexibility.

The squad Director and selection panel are delighted to announce a 21 strong team for the forthcoming season.

This is another great boost for the Cheerleading organization, highlighting yet again the success UKCA has in developing individual athletes across the UK and in particular Northern Ireland. Since 2008, UKCA has been developing within the Home Country offering, Coach Education, Workshops, Festivals & Competitions.

The successful team will be revealed by 27th August 2011.
