European Cheerleading Championship 2012 to be held in Italy

The 2012 European Cheerleading Championship and Junior European Cheerleading Championship will be held in Riccione, Italy on June 30th and July 1st 2012.
After intense talks and a visit of ECA president Vojko Korosec to Riccione in August, ECA decided to hold the 2012 ECC/ JECC in Italy. Riccione offers a new arena, the Riccione playhall, to host the ECC/ JECC and the mayor of the city promised full support for this event.

Ingolf Neumann, ECA board member and head of the ECA Championship Committee:
“We are convinced that we’ve found a superb partner to host our championships in 2012. FICAD president Riccardo Cavalieri showed us good reasons to hold ECC in Italy and we think that Italy will be a great host to athletes, coaches and spectators from all over Europe.”

Riccione is a city on the Adriatic coast. It has experience in hosting big sports events, such as the XVII Seniors Athletics World Championships in 2007 with more than 9.000 participants or the annual “beach volleyball festival” with some 1.000 athletes.
ECA is the European governing body for the sport of cheerleading. ECA hosts the annual European Cheerleading Championship and Junior European Cheerleading Championship with up to 1.500 athletes competing for the European title.

Best Ever ECC?

As usual UKCA were well represented at ECC 2010 in Helsinki on 10 and 11 July. 16 teams from 5 clubs – Gemini, Hawks, Maximum Cheer, STCA and Wild Spirit Allstars – carried our hopes in a sweltering stadium ironically called the Ice Arena. Off the floor UKCA made an equally important contribution providing 2 of the judges, 2 shadow judges who are now fully qualified at European level and the Head of ECA’s organising committee. A small but enthusiastic band of supporters kept the teams’ spirits up.

The Arena normally hosts ice hockey, which meant there was room for 2 floors and 2 panels of judges. This kept the competition flowing nicely – on the Sunday the super efficient Finns had us nearly an hour ahead of schedule!

Around 1700 athletes from 70 teams who had qualified from their own National Championships gathered to parade their skills. And what skills they were, the Scandinavians and Norway in particular dominating through teams like Viqueens. There is no doubt that the standard of competition gets higher year on year, which is what makes Cheerleading such an exciting sport to be part of right now.

Sadly this year there were no individual events, a rich source of medals in the past for UK. Phoebe Hulme and Rachael Burrows had contributed 5 in the last 3 years, culminating in Rachael’s stunning gold medal performance last year.

So where would the medals come from, if indeed anywhere? Rachael had already served notice of her abilities as a coach whilst still competing and the responsibility of founding and running her own club has allowed those talents to blossom with success at all levels of UKCA competitions this year. The other 4 teams have many years European experience between them.

Saturday was a barren day for the Seniors – the highlight being STCA’s Senior Female stunt group finishing 8th. Perhaps it was asking too much for them to repeat their 4th at the Worlds in a highly competitive discipline.

Sunday started brightly with Maximum Cheer called to the podium in the Junior Mixed Stunt Group category. It was a truly wonderful achievement in their first taste of European competition to win silver. Rachael was understandably bursting with pride at her young teams’ performance. Sadly the other junior teams were unable to build on that success.

All too quickly all the medals and trophies had been awarded and another ECC was over. The best ever? As someone with experience of just the last 3 and an organiser, it would be wrong for me to comment. But judging by the comments and thanks still pouring in it was the place to be last weekend.

Congratulations to all those who competed – just to qualify for that level of competition is an achievement. However we will be working with teams to increase the chances of moving up the rankings and hopefully bringing more medals home in future.

A great start to 2010!

Stunt Workshops
Well 2010 has certainly started with a bang for UKCA, first the launch or our new website which is developing everyday and then the fabulous success of our Stunt Workshops at the Manchester Velodrome.

We hosted Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced level workshops to give our coaches and teams the opportunity to develop and progress their stunts skills. They proved very popular, selling out in record time and were extremely well received by all those lucky enough to attended.

Highlights for us were helping two teams achieve back tuck basket tosses for the first time, introducing 360 degree rotational mounts to our advanced teams, introducing twisting dismounts to intermediate teams and seeing everyone achieve a new skill whilst taking part in the workshop.

Coaches and teams benefited from the relaxed and positive environment the workshops were delivered in and the amount of one to one help they were able to access from the UKCA trained tutor team. They built confidence and team spirit and all will be returning to their teams with new skills to teach and develop. We can’t wait to see you all at one of our competitions this year showcasing your new skills.

Due to popular demand we are now running the workshops again on 3rd April, so for anyone who missed out, now is the time to get yourself and your team booked on. We hope to see you there!

Tutor Open Day
Another exciting date in our diary was the Tutor Open Day. The UKCA Education Team had been looking forward to this day for sometime now. The day was open to all UKCA members who had an interest in becoming trained as a tutor for UKCA, it was an opportunity to meet the existing team and gain an insight into the skills required for a UKCA tutor.

We had a fun filled day, learned plenty and really got to know one another, all key parts of being part of the UKCA Team. Highlights included some very entertaining individual presentations from the candidates and with the personality testing, us all learning a little more about ourselves.

I am pleased to say that all the candidates showed potential to become part of the tutoring team. They will now decide if they want to follow the tutoring programme and begin observing and part delivering on our courses.

We will look to hold another tutoring open day in the next few months, so for any of you who are interested, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with UKCA. It’s a commitment free day and by attending doesn’t mean you have to take tutoring any further.

Good luck to all our new tutors who are coming on board with the programme!

Coaching Courses in 2010
We are pleased to say that after the snowy start to 2010 which saw a number of courses postponed, the tutoring team are back into full swing travelling the country to deliver courses of all levels in both Cheerleading and Street Cheer.

Every course is unique and it’s fantastic to meet so many people who are excited and keen to become involved in Cheerleading, its also very rewarding to see so many of you coming back for further training and development.

Some of the courses that really stick out for me are
Monday 25th Jan in Lancaster – this was the first of many courses that we are delivering for the British College Sport network. It was fantastic to see so many students enthused by Cheerleading and looking to develop it at College level. There were some big personalities on the course and really made it a fun and enjoyable day for us all – Thanks Guys

Tues 2nd Feb Maidenhead – What a day! This was a massive course with 28 participants, 4 of which were guys all very eager to spread the word of Cheerleading. You provided us with some extremely entertaining moves and proved that its not just females who find Cheerleading a fun and interactive sport. Cheer is really growing in the South, and we are pleased to be assisting with the growth and development there. Good luck guys and we’ll hopefully see you on the 9th June for your Cheer Festival
